The start of a new season brings new expectations. On paper we had a team that could challenge anyone in the competition. Unfortunately the tone was set early and we didnt come prepared to play. When a coach says dressed and ready at 11am you don't rock up at 11am and chat with the boys for 15 minutes. We were not prepared bofore the game started and a good side was able to defeat us comfortably. This was a lesson learned the hard way.

There where moments during the game were you really can see how much we have improved since last season. Liam Sullivan retrieved a ball off the fence, hit his cut off who threw the runner out at the plate. Jeremy did a good job on the hill and looked menecing at times. Josh and Justin hit the ball well and Michael made his debut on the hill and threw really well.

The standard has now been set and the team needs to come together and show the league what its really made of.

Congratulations to the newcomers - Jacqes, Tristan and Tsukasa on their debut for the club. Jacqes impressed going 4 for 4 in the batter's box and pitching the last dig. Tristan made good contact at the plate and Tsukasa got good at bats with 2 walks and an RBI.

Well done to big Dave Stivey on the hill for the first 4 innings and welcome back Hooks behind the mask.

A few of the "older" guys were a little rusty but the effort all day was great and we looked like a baseball team. Everyone doing their bit - looking for signals - helping out base coaching - getting down early to set up, etc. We all showed plenty of determination in the batter's box and we made the outs when we needed. I know we will make the occasional error but if we are switched on mentally we will reduce that to few or none!!!

Thanks to Marty Ross for filling in at 3rd base. We look forward to your next school holiday visit.

Play(s) of the Day is undoubtedly Jacqes batting effort and the DS award (dummy spit) goes to Clint Johnson for throwing his helmet in the dugout. Team rules don't allow that this year.

After carefully studying the scorer's book I have determined that we were the UWA side... and that we beat Carine 9 - 4. How was this feat achieved, you may ask?

We initially undertook a complicated memory test. This involved asking players to turn up at the game on time (8am Sunday), and most passed this first hurdle well.
On the Sunday morning players were put through an exhausting analysis of arm, leg & brain speed whilst warming up amidst the studious eyes of the coach & scouts. These tasks initially involved carrying half the Club's physical resources across the great, green McGilivray Plain to the second distant diamond. Upon arrival at this barren spot more complicated cognitive testing was incorporated to test the mental ability of players... primarily this involved assembling and erecting shade tents!

Following this, the group were required to warm up and throw, catch & hit baseballs. Weird eh? The coach had little knowledge of the playing group and was recently considering retirement... so after warm up he resorted to reading/interpreting a nearby earthworm's entrails to determine the day's playing spots and batting line-up *.
(* Edit: It should be noted that various coaches in the Club's history have incorporate different methods for determining ideal line-ups and playing spots, and given the stress of this task none should be overly criticised for exotic or esoteric practices, including phrenology (reading the bumps on player's heads). Only the bizarre sexual practices of the coach of the B grade Whips several years ago have been outlawed, and that coach (Shanks) was sent into the wilderness to repay his many sins).

We soon realised we were playing a young, fit-looking Carine side with an ex-A or B Grade pitcher, and decided we needed something of that sort ourselves. Well we had Macca who rose to the occasion of Sean Major's 3500 th game and pitched a great game. The scorer obviously does not own a red pen, but my memory tells me there was probably not an earned run from Carine. He was ably caught by Mark Wall, with good performances in the field by all (except the coach at short stop? ...I'm not sure if that was all entrails?). Special mention and thanks to the new players: Matthew Fouhy, Tyson Maloney, Chris Chesworth, Mike Smith & Ashley Dunn.
